UNSPSC (United Nations Standard Products and Services Code)

The United Nations Standard Products and Services Code (UNSPSC) is a hierarchical commodity classification system developed and maintained by GS1 US under a licensing agreement with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). It provides a globally consistent taxonomy for products and services, organized into four levels: segment, family, class, and commodity. Some US government procurement systems -- particularly at the state and local level -- use UNSPSC codes to categorize purchases and enable spend analytics across agencies.

What is UNSPSC?

The UNSPSC system assigns an eight-digit code to each product or service. The first two digits identify the segment (the broadest category), the next two identify the family, the next two identify the class, and the final two identify the specific commodity. For example, segment 43 covers information technology, broadcasting, and telecommunications equipment; within that segment, family 4321 covers computer equipment and accessories; class 432113 covers notebook computers; and commodity 43211503 covers a specific notebook computer type.

UNSPSC is not mandated by the Federal Acquisition Regulation for federal procurement, but several federal and state-level e-procurement platforms incorporate it for spend categorization and reporting. The GSA Advantage catalog and some state purchasing portals tag products with UNSPSC codes to support cross-agency spend analysis and demand aggregation. The code set is updated multiple times per year by GS1 US, and using an outdated code can result in miscategorization in systems that validate against the current release.

Unlike NAICS codes (which classify the contractor's primary business activity) or PSC/FSC codes (which classify what the government is buying under a specific contract line item), UNSPSC codes classify the physical product or service itself at a global commodity level.

Why it matters for contractors

Contractors selling through e-catalog platforms or state purchasing portals that use UNSPSC codes must assign the correct code to each product in their catalog. An incorrect or outdated UNSPSC code can cause a product to appear in the wrong search category, reducing its visibility to buyers who search by commodity code. Some state cooperative purchasing agreements require vendors to tag their catalog items with valid UNSPSC codes as a condition of catalog approval.

For federal contractors, UNSPSC awareness matters primarily when selling through GSA Advantage or similar online marketplaces that use the taxonomy for product search and spend reporting. Understanding which UNSPSC code applies to a product line helps contractors align their catalog entries with how agency buyers search.

Example

An office supply distributor seeks to load its product catalog onto a state purchasing portal that uses UNSPSC for classification. The distributor's product data team maps each SKU to the correct eight-digit UNSPSC code, using the current GS1 code set. A set of printer toner cartridges is classified under commodity 44103105 (Toner cartridges). When a state agency buyer searches the portal for toner, the distributor's products appear in the correct category alongside other compliant vendors, rather than being buried under a miscellaneous "other supplies" segment.
