What are Military Standards?

While MIL-SPECs tell contractors what a product must do and how it must perform, MIL-STDs tell them how to do the work: how to analyze reliability, how to format engineering drawings, how to develop and test software, how to conduct environmental stress screening, and how to document quality assurance processes.

Some of the most widely referenced MIL-STDs include: MIL-STD-1553 (digital time division command/response multiplex data bus, the communications standard used in virtually all aircraft and weapon systems avionics); MIL-STD-810 (environmental engineering considerations and laboratory tests, the standard for testing equipment against temperature, humidity, vibration, shock, and similar stresses); MIL-STD-461 (electromagnetic compatibility requirements for subsystems and equipment); MIL-STD-882 (system safety program requirements); and MIL-STD-31000 (technical data packages).

MIL-STD-1553, in particular, is so fundamental to defense avionics that compliance is virtually mandatory for any system that needs to communicate with aircraft systems, making it a de facto industry standard that has been widely adopted commercially and by NATO allies.

Like MIL-SPECs, MIL-STDs have been rationalized since the 1994 Perry Memo, with many replaced by commercial standards (IEEE, SAE, ASTM, IPC) or performance-based alternatives. However, some MIL-STDs, particularly those covering military-unique processes with no commercial equivalent, remain mandatory for defense programs.
