Federal Supply Group (FSG)

A Federal Supply Group (FSG) is a two-digit code used within the Federal Catalog System to organize related Federal Supply Classes (FSCs) into broad product groupings. FSGs provide the top level of a hierarchical classification structure that the Department of Defense and civilian agencies use to catalog, manage, and procure supplies. Understanding FSGs helps contractors identify which product categories the government purchases under the supply classification system and how their offerings are positioned within federal inventory management.

What is a Federal Supply Group?

The Federal Catalog System, managed by the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) under the authority of the Federal Acquisition Regulation and DoD supply management directives, organizes products into groups and classes. Each FSG represents a broad commodity category and is identified by a two-digit code. Within each FSG, four-digit Federal Supply Class (FSC) codes identify more specific product families, and individual items are assigned a 13-digit National Stock Number (NSN).

For example, FSG 58 covers communications, detection, and coherent radiation equipment, while FSG 65 covers medical, dental, and veterinary equipment and supplies. There are approximately 78 FSGs in active use. The FSG/FSC system is primarily a supply management and cataloging tool rather than a procurement search tool, but it appears in contract line items, NSN requests, and DoD acquisition documents where supply classification governs inventory and logistics management.

Contractors supplying physical goods to the DoD or defense agencies frequently encounter FSG and FSC codes when registering products in the DLA's Federal Logistics Information System (FLIS), seeking NSN assignments, or responding to solicitations that specify supply class requirements.

Why it matters for contractors

Contractors selling physical products to the federal government -- particularly to DoD and defense agencies -- need to know the FSG and FSC codes applicable to their items. These codes determine which inventory management office manages the supply class, which distribution depots stock items in that class, and whether a product must go through specific qualification or testing requirements before being awarded an NSN.

Misclassifying a product under the wrong FSC can result in routing the item to the wrong contracting activity or failing qualification checks that apply to the correct supply class. For contractors pursuing NSN assignments for new items, identifying the correct FSG and FSC is the first step in the cataloging request process.

Example

A manufacturer of industrial lighting equipment wants to supply LED fixtures to military installations. The applicable FSG is 61 (Electric Wire and Power Distribution Equipment) and the relevant FSC is 6110 (Electrical Control Equipment). The manufacturer submits a cataloging request to DLA, referencing the correct FSC to route the request to the appropriate item manager. The item manager reviews the request, assigns an NSN, and the product becomes eligible for inclusion in contract solicitations referencing that supply class.
